Over the past few years, our farm has been experimenting with breeding new flower colors not typically seen in zinnias. This has allowed us to cultivate a romantic array of zinnia varieties that are finally coming into bloom. Among this year’s newest offerings is a remarkably stable pale pink line, that traces its lineage back to the beautifully captivating Victorian Wedding zinnia bred by @floretflower — A heartfelt thank you to Erin for her dedication, which empowers small farms like mine to explore and create with such exquisitely unique hues.

But our breeding journey doesn’t end here! We remain steadfast in our commitment to isolating an even broader spectrum of shades within this enchanting zinnia family. The delicate smaller blooms of this pale pink variety effortlessly complement countless bouquets, while the striking larger blush and champagne varieties we’ve refined in previous seasons truly command attention in grand arrangements. This season, we are focusing on a delightful mix of both new and established zinnia lines—ranging from charming small flowers to stunning large blooms. We eagerly await the results of last year’s curated crosses as the season progresses, while also growing out carefully saved seeds from lines that stand strong without the need for further refinement.

The farm is absolutely bursting with beauty right now, and I can’t get enough of these hydrangeas! While I usually swoon over the classic blue mop heads, this year those stunning blush varieties from @highhandnursery are really starting to shine and steal my heart!

Did you know that you can actually change the color of most hydrangea blooms just by adjusting the pH of the soil? Isn’t that fascinating? If you’re dreaming of soft baby blue flowers, you’ll want to keep your soil on the acidic side, ideally below a pH of 5.5. For those lovely purple hues that many gardeners adore, aim for a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. And if you’re hoping for pretty pinks and vibrant reds, simply raise that pH above 7. It’s amazing how even the smallest adjustments can lead to stunning transformations in your garden!
One fun tip: coffee grounds, which are naturally acidic, can be a great way to help lower your soil pH. Just remember, while coffee grounds are beneficial, it’s best not to apply them directly to your plants as they might hinder their growth. Instead, mix them in with your soil at a ratio of one part coffee grounds to three parts soil. So go ahead, experiment a little and enjoy watching your hydrangeas flourish in a rainbow of colors!

March has arrived, and what a beautiful month it is! We’ve been graced with some lovely 70° days, and now, the much-needed rain is nourishing our farm. Everything around us is either buzzing with life or just about ready for new plants as the threat of frost fades away. Exciting times ahead!

As we step into this vibrant season, I want to share a little secret to ensuring your garden thrives this spring and summer: the magic of pulling weeds! 🌿✨ Right now, when the ground is still soft and moist from the recent rain, is the absolute best time to tackle those pesky weeds. Yes, Bermuda Grass, I’m talking to you!

By pulling those weeds now, you’re giving your beloved plants a fighting chance to grow strong and healthy. All you need to consider is your average last frost date. I suggest starting tomato seeds indoors about 6 weeks before your last frost. Wow, we’ve certainly been on quite the journey here on the farm this summer, and it has been nothing short of wild, especially with all the intense heat waves we’ve been experiencing. It’s been a challenge to manage everything and keep up with my social media presence, and I genuinely apologize for my absence. Sometimes, it feels like I’m juggling a hundred different roles at once, especially with temperatures soaring to a blistering 104° today.
However, despite the sweltering heat, I can’t help but notice that there’s a hint of fall in the morning air, and for that, I am incredibly thankful. Fall has always held a special place in my heart; it truly is my absolute favorite season of the year!
There’s something so magical about fall. The flowers are in full bloom, showcasing a splendid array of colors, and the vegetables and fruits are thriving, offering us an abundance of delicious produce. Plus, how can I forget to mention the delightful, crisp weather that makes every morning and evening so enjoyable?
As we navigate the busy days ahead, our primary focus is on wrapping up a few large projects that I’m anxious to share, including new beds (of course!).
Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to share that the prospects for our fall flower crops are looking absolutely amazing! I can see a brilliant variety of beautiful blooms on the horizon, which means we’ll have stunning centerpieces available for the holiday season when the time comes. I started several hundred rudbeckia from seed several years ago, and have slowly culled all but my favorite colors. Now I have this beautiful understated mix that includes mellow yellows, soft tangerines, jewel tones and even some shades of melon.
Rudbeckia is such an easy perennial to grow from seed, I highly recommend trying it in your garden. Not only will a few plants provide beautiful summer and fall blooms, but the seed heads help feed the birds in the winter!

It’s hydrangea season here on the farm! One of my favorite flowers, hydrangeas make an excellent base for a bouquet. Do you want to grow hydrangeas in your garden? Try them! These shrubs make an excellent plant for beginners. To thrive, hydrangeas need ample shade and water. Also, all the blooms need deadheaded once they are spent. But, other than that, hydrangeas are an easy breezy plant with loads of blooms in late spring.

We have been lucky, and have had a few days of clouds—we’ve planted all 15 of our heirloom tomatoes. If you are in zone 9b or warmer, it’s time to plant! If you are in a cooler climate, definitely be thinking about hardening 🍅 plants before moving starts outside permanently. Start with 1 hour of sun a day, and gradually increase time by about an hour a day, if well tolerated.

Pansies and violas are the perfect winter and early spring flower. The flowers make cute, long lasting posies when tucked into a bud vase and also work as a filler flower in larger arrangements. Undeterred by cold weather, these beauties will bloom steadily through the colder months. We grew these from seed and years later they are still thriving. Their unique color looks fabulous when mixed with yellow daffodils.

Anemone season has begun at our farm. These beautiful flowers do well in our mild winters, withstanding our light frosts quite well. We are growing a variety of colors, but this bright fuchsia grabs my eye every time I walk through the yard—I think it is perfect for winter bouquets when paired with ranunculus, eucalyptus and other sparkly bits.
Anemones are hardy bulbs. Just like daffodils, once planted, the bulbs will continue to flower for years to come. Also, their delicate flowers have a great vase life!

Sunflowers are such a stunning workhorse at our farm! Though they are know as a summer beauty, sunflowers will bloom well into fall, and even winter in our zone 9b climate. Surprisingly, even after our first bout of true frost the last few evenings, many of the sunflowers are still thriving!
We grow mostly single stem varieties as opposed to the branching types, only because the single stem kind last much longer in a vase. I like growing an assortment of colors, from the palest yellow that is nearly white to deep red, and all have similar requirements to grow happy plants. Sunflowers don’t ask for much and are a great flower for beginner gardeners! All they need is a seed poked into the soil about 1/2 an inch, plenty of sun, a little water, and most importantly… that the squirrels don’t eat the heads off 🐿️ My advice for squirrels is to just plant extra sunflowers. I tried cayenne pepper sprinkled around the base of the plants, but it did not deter the squirrels! If they are a true nuisance, motion activated sprinklers are said to help, but I haven’t tried this method yet. Sunflowers are also a fantastic flower to feed bees, butterflies, birds and a variety of pollinators.

Persimmons are the easiest and most reliable fruit tree I have ever grown. We have planted over 100 fruit trees on our farm since we moved here, and our persimmons have needed the least amount of care and have already provided huge harvests. Thinking about planting some fruit trees? I highly recommend persimmons, if you have the space for a larger fruit tree. In addition to being relatively easy, they also provide fruit at a time of the year where fresh fruits and vegetables are waning, and more expensive. Furthermore, the fruit keeps once harvested for an extended period, prolonging the season of enjoying homegrown fruit. As far as a variety, I like Giant Fuyu, which produces fruits about twice the size of a typical fuyu. I also enjoy Coffee Cake, which is richly flavored and ripens a few weeks earlier than the Giant Fuyu.

Our avocado trees are bearing fruit. It has taken 4 years for them to produce, but I feel that they will be worth the wait! In zone 9b California, it is possible to grow avocados, but they do require some extra love. This tree has appreciated being situated next to one of our greenhouses. The extra protection from the nearby structure helps with wind, sun and cold temperatures. If you plan to grow avocado trees, I recommend a Mexican or Mexican hybrid variety, such as Bacon or Fuerte. These types are the most tolerant of cold temperatures. However, they are not recommended if you live near the ocean because they do not do well with salty air. If you are in a coastal region, West Indian varieties are a better choice. Stay tuned for a taste test of the bounty!

In California, fava bean is largely grown as a winter cover crop to protect and add nitrogen to soil. We love this purple variety, Extra Precoce A Grano Violetto. It is a colorful, extra-early variety suitable for the short, cool weather season we have here in California, zone 9b. This gorgeous variety produces long pods that are filled with six large beans that are a unique plum color and are sweet tasting. A unique and colorful variety originally from Italy. I initially sourced our seeds from Baker Creek seeds, but have saved seeds over the years, and now no longer need to buy any when cover crop time comes along. Once the days cool down a bit, the blooms come on with a vengeance. Perfect timing, as many of the other flowers have started to slow down production a bit.
